I'm not being sarcastic or snarky, but what about preorders that were made last year?  Do you track the cost when you ordered the game, or when you pick it up?

I think a partially paid preorder should be considered as a deposit, and not as a sale. In the accounting world, I believe the money stores retain on preorders would be considered liabilities rather than assets (even partial preorder payments), since they are still obligated to provide you with goods not yet received. Still, for our purposes, if payment is made in full, or your credit card has been charged, it should count in the year the preorder was made, IMO.

I ordered RS:V before the first, but was billed on the 2nd, so I included it this year, even though I don't have it yet.

Really, let's not take this so seriously. This is just a way to keep track of how much we spend on our hobby. I did spend a lot last year, but I don't have a lot on my list I regret purchasing (even the UMDs). If anyone wants to use a Byzantine accounting scheme to fool themselves, I'm sure we'll expose them for the charlatans they are. And if you pre-paid for games in '06, they're free in '07, baby!

My take on the points thing is that you list the points when you buy them.  You aren't buying the game, just allocating the previously purchased points.  Cue Cincinnati...

Oh, as long as you are consistent, it's not going to make a difference one way or the other.  If any any year you bought $60 worth of Live Points, I bet you spent around $60 worth of Live points.  There will be some overlap from year to year but either way of counting it is going to be reasonably accurate.

Uh oh....game sharing on the PS3 could make this even more complicated.  Do we count it on a game by game basis or do we just count what we each contribute on a regular basis.  I think we may need to send this to NASA to figure out.   ;)

Mods,

Since we all seem comfortable enough to post our spending in this thread, I'd be interested in seeing a table in Post #1 showing our names and total spent for the year. A one-stop spot for us to claim those who've spent more than us are "way too into gaming," while those who have spent less are "clearly n00bs."

I have been playing with the idea (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pMx1P0CgAHwjFvubHFmuHYA) of using a google spreadsheet for centrally tracking contact info without having to filter out comments or find the summary post, etc.  Seems like this would be a good place for tracking the spending too, since you could make graphs and charts, etc.

Anyway, let me know what you think of either idea.  I was also considering a wiki for this, but I think this might work better.  I have to spend more time investigating the access permissions settings.

Oh, I quit tracking somewhere around mid-year.  I fail.  Accounting is work, not fun.  I am playing off 100% trade credit at this point and will be for the rest of the year, it would have been interesting to see my final accounting but I just lose interest.

Since it is only September, Mike, you should be able to fill in the blanks easily.

We all know you iron a crease into your receipts and hang them in the closet.

Mine's update to date (http://www.tehbias.com/forum/index.php?topic=1652.msg30467#msg30467) as well, though I haven't been buying much lately.  I preordered Halo 3 six months ago.

I haven't updated in quite a while (April to be exact) but I'm going to guess I'm in the $1200 range.  I really didn't spend that much from May to September and I didn't buy nearly as many XBLA games this year as I did last year.  I also used trade-ins as much as possible.

I haven't posted in this thread since April, when it was becoming apparent that I was easily going to break $1500.  I probably spent over $2000 this year which is pretty scary, but $60 a game adds up pretty quickly.  I played a lot of great games though this year.  Didn't finish a lot yet, but had a lot of fun playing them.

My grand total for 2007: $630.76.

Not too bad at all! I had a lot of trade-in credit/giftcards so those helped out quite a bit.

I started out tracking my expenses very carefully, but somewhere in the middle of moving, getting married and living a sad and lonely month without my 360 I lost track of everything.  I'm going to go back and try and fill in the missing blanks and get a final figure.  I'm pretty sure that it's going to be a very scary one as this was the best year of gaming releases I can ever remember.

On a side note, with Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero III and Rock Band all coming out this year, it's scary how much money I spent in the formerly niche market of rhythm games alone this year.  Oh well.  Happy New Year to all!

Well I finished just $8 shy of three grand.  I have a feeling this year will be much more frugal, especially with a daughter arriving in March.

$1373.83 for me. That's a surprising $114.49 per month! It is also surprising that I spent $684.02 on software and $689.81 on hardware. That is about as close to even as you can get. But wait, there's more. The most disturbing number is that I only spent $3.71 more than Allen. You are my doppelganger, sir!
