A companion piece to Random Image Thread.

This is hilarious. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIQrBouWRiE) It's from the Jimmy Kimmel show. I have no idea how he got so many celebs to take part. At the very least it shows Josh Groban has a sense of humor I never thought possible.

This is TEH AWESOMEST 9 MINUTES EVER!!!! (http://www.influks.com/post1090.html)  The video plays automatically, so if you watch Ninja Warrior and haven't seen the complete Sasuke 17, you might not want to watch.  I absolutely love this show on G4, and can't wait to see more.

The fisherman is Amie's favourite Ninja Warrior.  She also likes his apprentice in Women of Ninja Warrior, but the chick with the silver gymnast outfit who ALWAYS WINS is her favourite...

I would love to try a Ninja Warrior Course.  Actually just the first stage, because I realize I could never pass the later ones.  And that video was from an earlier (read: easier than now) season.  They just add more and more punishing things - like the globe grab or whatever it's called.

Yeah, all that to say I heart Ninja Warrior too.

Yes, Makato Nagano is a beast.  I saw one of the new ones the other night with the globe grab.  After I watched Sasuke 17 last night, they showed the preview of 18 where they built an "unbeatable" course.  I'm assuming the globe grab is part of the new course.

Title: Re: Random Video Thread
Post by: adamsappel on May 01, 2008, 11:55:05 PM
is the milk dealie the bacteria in the milk reacting to the soap?

How does it work? (http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/00000066)

"Milk is mostly water but it also contains vitamins, minerals, proteins, and tiny droplets of fat suspended in solution. Fats and proteins are sensitive to changes in the surrounding solution (the milk).

When you add soap, the weak chemical bonds that hold the proteins in solution are altered. It's a free for all! The molecules of protein and fat bend, roll, twist, and contort in all directions. The food color molecules are bumped and shoved everywhere, providing an easy way to observe all the invisible activity. At the same time, soap molecules combine to form a micelle, or cluster of soap molecules. These micelles distribute the fat in the milk.

This rapidly mixing fat and soap causes swirling and churning where a micelle meets a fat droplet. When there are micelles and fat droplets everywhere the motion stops, but not until after you've enjoyed the show!

There's another reason the colors explode the way they do. Since milk is mostly water, it has surface tension like water. The drops of food coloring floating on the surface tend to stay put. Liquid soap wrecks the surface tension by breaking the cohesive bonds between water molecules and allowing the colors to zing throughout the milk. What a party!"

Wait, wait. This fight is because someone doesn't like Weezer? Really? Weezer is worth bitching and name-calling about? Huh. Okay.
Nah, I like Wheezer a good bit actually.  What I don't like is a video where a group decides to try to be creative by proxy by paying off a bunch of you tube mini-stars to try to steal their goodwill with the world.  It's just such a blatant attempt to make a You tube hit without, you know, actually having to come up with anything themselves.  It's referencing without meaning.  (see also season 4 and up of Family Guy).  The only thing that video could possibly be communicating is that by literally wrapping themselves in the appearance of the stars they know that they are doing artistic theft, but I see nothing else about the video that suggests such self-awareness.  I don't blame the people who agreed to participate, after all I'm sure they ned the money and they came across this honestly.  But The band was handed a fairly large amount of money and told to make something and instead they just took from people who actually had to make something with none of their resources by the admirable effort of pushing an idea into creation and letting it stand on its merit.  It's insulting and it's a waste of an opportunity and so I typed out exactly the response they were so obviously hoping for, except with the same sincerity I saw in their video.

As for trolling, well, only one of us has ever made this personal.  Only one of us is angry.  My post was motivated by nothing other then my feelings about the video and american media culture and possibly to make someone snicker to boot.  I had no idea you would be so personally affected by my opinion of a music video made by some strangers.  I am sorry it bothered you so.  I once again extend my offer to stay out of the non-gaming threads.
Title: Re: Random Video Thread

I once again extend my offer to stay out of the non-gaming threads.

I'd really rather we didn't keep everything on this site strictly about gaming. It's nice to discuss other things from time to time. But since things in this thread seem to be getting heated, I want to make it clear that my response is one of wanting honest, amicable discussion.

It's referencing without meaning.

I'm not sure I agree. I've had plenty of conversations with people about cartoons I watched as a child. I've talked for hours with people that I didn't grow up with about childhood memories that we had in common. Our conversation didn't have some deeper, more sincere message. We simply were reminiscing...but I wouldn't call that referencing without meaning. And I didn't assume the people I was having the conversation with were simply trying to curry favor with me.

Same thing for the video. Was it deep and meaningful? Of course not. Were the images cohesive and relevant to each other, telling a story? No. Did it appeal to basic emotions? Sure. The music was pleasing and I got a smile seeing things I hadn't seen in a while.

I totally understand what you are saying, and I don't necessarily disagree with a lot of it. I'm just not insulted by it (the video).  And why must music (or art in general) have to have deep meaning when an ice-cream cone doesn't have to?

I'm a bit hazy where he draws the line between "sexuality" and "sex".  Is the absence of sex (or sexual acts) in major video games holding back an entire artform?  I don't really think so.  But how sexuality is portrayed in video games certainly is holding the genre back.  He does a great job about addressing the "over-sexualizing" of the medium - with special attention paid to the grossly dissproportionate "assets" of many a female video game character.

I'll leave off here for now, and see what anybody else has to say.

Trolling has nothing to do with taking it personally.  You've made a concerted effort to shit on numerous posts and threads here.  You make a snide remark, then you don't come back unless someone calls you out on it.  I'm not personally upset you're an ass, you just are one and you've been one since you first started posting here.  You're like the resident grump here, with your holier than thou posts and it's seriously fucking annoying.

Instead of making an effort to stay out of all non-gaming threads, how about you make an effort to stay out of all threads?

With the exception of the flaming language, the basic premise of what you have said is true.  I believe I do post a negative opinion more than a positive one.  I think snide is inapt, but I used the word snarky.  I do only come back to say more if someone responds to it.   More problematically, I have absolutely no idea why that is bad or why it bothers you so much.  I'm not being negative about any of the people here.  I'm even dealing with you, who has been constantly insulting for days now, instead of just ignoring it or firing back.  Obviously I'm not trolling since I am exerting an effort to learn how to avoid bothering you.  If I thought everyone wanted me gone like you, I'd go.  I'm only here because I like the community - we mostly play at different times.  Unless, that's the case, though, I'm trying to figure out how to stay, and honestly participate without having this clearly bothersome effect on you.

There's nothing worse than moderation, at least if you are someone like me.  I admittedly try to avoid it.  We certainly try to minimize moderation at this site.  Here are my two cents, which are worth nothing more than that of the other mods.

We'll never restrict members having negative opinions.  The only real member who has ever been banned from this site wasn't banned because of his feelings on issues, it was because of his trying to drag personal 'dirty laundry' into this site and repeatedly trying to stir things up because of an axe he had to grind that had nothing to do with the forum itself.  That was my impression of the situation and I feel it was a valid one.

Part of the reason this site exists is because of other sites that wanted to censor negative opinions.  Ultimately you have discussions of lesser quality if you aren't open to having all opinions aired.

And yes, we do discourage Ad hominem (http://Ad hominem) attacks, as they don't contribute to meaningful discourse as well, and are counter-productive.  Chris' response to Robert was of such a nature; they didn't argue Robert's points, they criticized Robert himself.

On the other hand, opinions that summarily dismiss something, instead of truly critiquing it have a tendency to frustrate other contributors to the virtual discussion, because they don't really provide much fodder for rebuttal.  I'd say Robert's initial post (regarding the Weezer video) was of this nature.  Posts like these, in my opinion, are more likely to result in ad hominem responses.

At the end of the day, nobody is 'in trouble'.  We'd just like to see everybody let bygones be just that, and try to get along.  Group hug?  Probably not realistic, but hey, we are idealists at heart here.

Regarding the Weezer video, is it even worth taking so seriously (pro or con)?  I doubt the band felt it was worth arguing about.  It's only rock and roll.

One of the "tricks" of snake-charming is they sew the snake's mouth shut. The snake strikes the child several times, but you can tell its mouth never opens.

What's disgusting is the person making the video is in no danger whatsoever. Only the helpless child. Regardless of de-fanging or mouth-sewing, the snake still could have done considerable damage to the child's eyes with the force of those strikes.

Title: Re: Random Video Thread

What advantages does the flip have over a digital camera in video mode?

It's lighter, simpler to operate, less expensive, more comfortable and stable to hold while shooting video, and likely has faster input response times.

For me, when it comes to cameras - both video and still - it all comes down to one question: Will I use it? I've only had the flip for 36 hours now, but I think I can safely answer with a big Yes. All the megapixels and modes and special features in the world don't matter a hill of beans if it's no fun to use. And for me, that's the biggest advantage it has over the video mode of a point-and-shoot. YMMV.

So, let me set this up. This video illustrates why I have a fear of certain birds and why I have a vendetta against peacocks, specifically. My dad was filming my grandpa and I feeding the peacocks at Fort Wilderness (a resort at Walt Disney World in Florida) and well, you'll see what happened (I swear, I'm lucky I didn't lose an eye ;) ). The "incident" occurs around the 2 minute 8 second mark.  It was taken around 1985 so I would have been around three years old.

Jeremy was nice and edited all together so now the entire world can see it in all its glory ;)

Enjoy...

Oh, and what gets me is my dad kept filming AFTER the incident and all the birds started to gather around outside our cabin...creepy!

Aw, it's so cute when it flies up to claw at your face. Wait, what?

Doesn't every kid eventually get a revelation that birds can be pretty damn mean? Usually it's when a goose or swan at a public park starts harassing them. We always feed them from the platform, the people who feed them on the ground get chased. When I was a kid, a crow landed in front of me and would not let me by. He kept pecking at my ankles until I was crying and I had to take another route home.

I always wanted to raise peafowl, but they are incredibly loud. As well as being, apparently, murderous beasts out for human blood.

I don't have a video - but I can comisserate to a degree.

When I was little my parents took me to a petting zoo - I was in the pen with all the deer, and I was feeding a fawn.  Being little, I decided to hug the fawn - this apparently angered the mother, who prompty knocked me down, and proceeded to stomp on my back.  After she was scared off, I was simply dazed, slightly bruised, but strangely not crying, and not really injured.  The petting zoo, however, was terrified, and provided us with all sorts of free stuff, which we took since I honestly was fine, but, hey...

Oh, and obviously my parents found this hilarious.

Everytime the subject of peafowl comes up, Mary and I usually get into a debate.  See, I used to raise peafowl and I'm quite fond of them.  Years ago, dad and I purchased one cock and one hen.  They raised five or six young pretty quickly.  I had a nice side business going with the feathers that the male would shed a few times per year.  I would gather them up a few times per day and when he had lost them, dad and I sold them to a local florist.  I think we were getting $1 a piece for them.  Certainly more than enough to cover the cost of feed.

We ended up taking them to a local petting zoo when we moved and couldn't look after them anymore.  They were lots of fun though!

I hate small birds, flightless birds, and seagulls.  A  lot.  My Wife calls gulls "Mean Gulls".  They are ornery fuckers that will kill at the slightest provocation*. Most other birds worry me.

*May or may not be exaggerated.

Seagulls are nasty birds. I was very surprised the first time I saw them at the beach. Some of them can be quite big (twss). We were at the beach last summer and before I could stop her my wife threw a piece of dropped food at a nearby gull. Instantly, we were surrounded by a flock of screaming birds and more were swooping overhead.

We used to go vacationing on Long Island when I was a kid.  There was no garbage pick up at the house we rented so we took our trash to the dump.  Between being close to the ocean and bay, it was a garbage dump, so it was swarming with gulls.  My brother used try to hit them with the garbage bags.  I really hoped he didn't hit one, because I figured it would be like pissing off a Skinhead.  Anger one and then all his buddies jump you.

Aw, it's so cute when it flies up to claw at your face. Wait, what?

I always wanted to raise peafowl, but they are incredibly loud. As well as being, apparently, murderous beasts out for human blood.

The scar it left on my face is cute too ;). Or so I'm told...

You are right on both counts; they are LOUD and they are murderous beasts, particularly the peahens (I was attacked by a female). Don't listen to what Jeremy has to say about them. ;) Actually, Jeremy just admitted that they can get a bit "uppity".

The petting zoo, however, was terrified, and provided us with all sorts of free stuff, which we took since I honestly was fine, but, hey...

Oh, and obviously my parents found this hilarious.

We didn't receive any compensation from Disney. My parents did not report it. They, too, found it hilarious and were too busy laughing about it ;). (Again, I reference how my father kept videotaping after the incident).

We ended up taking them to a local petting zoo when we moved and couldn't look after them anymore.  They were lots of fun though!

I would have taken them elsewhere.

On another trip to Florida, I was bitten by an ostrich at Sarasota Jungle. Why do birds hate me?

The other bird I hate: the CANADA GOOSE! These things have invaded the beaches of Goderich and with them comes their shit! You can't walk or sit anywhere without fear of getting goose shit on you. I have my own opinions on what we should do about the problem but because they are Canada's national bird, my opinions would be frowned upon. ;)

I also have a seagull story. Again, it takes place in Florida. My dad, the animal lover, saw a lone gull on the beach. He said "Poor thing looks hungry" and proceeded to take the Pringles from me and throw one to the gull. The gull looked at it, starts squawking, and next thing we know, my dad and I are running down the beach being chased by seagulls.

Useless (but maybe interesting) information: my dad's camcorder used to record the peacock attack was the same camcorder used in Back to the Future. You know, the JVC camcorder.

The G20 protesters utilized many global social networks like Facebook and Twitter during their protest of...globalization.

They also pointed out that many of the businesses smashed, like "Urban Outfitters" were places that most of the protesters probably shopped at.

Kind of cool, albeit slow, video of a couple of guys light painting WiFi signals.

Rob Zombie's Woolite commercial. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnFIOj2dZRQ&feature=player_embedded) Yes, you read that right. And it's every bit as disturbing as you'd imagine. I'm not sure what demographic they were aiming for with this.

I've posted a video before of this guy "flying" (while he isn't truly flying, he is falling with great style), but here's a best-of video. How the hell do you get good at something like this, without dying? It's not something that you can practice from smaller heights. Maybe it's his brass balls that make him more aerodynamic.

Ok, I don't know how to get the video to show up in the post, but I thought this was pretty funny.
