Title: Official Playstation 4 thread
Post by: FLYING SE7EN on February 21, 2013, 10:14:11 AM
So, here is the official (non)announcement:

http://gizmodo.com/5985701/the-playstation-4-is-here

Specs here:

Controller:

Interesting that they didn't show the console itself, nor discuss game media format or used game capability...

Since my PS3 is covered with dust, I doubt I'll be getting a PS4, but I like the changes to the controller triggers and the Move light bar seems cool.  Not sure how that touchpad will be used or if it'll be gimickey...  Love that the controller finally has a headset port so you can ditch the BT headset fiasco.

Cloud based streaming of old PS1, 2 and 3 games.   Hmmm.  I don't know about you, but my PS3 takes foreeeeeeeevvverrr to download stuff.  Netflix is okay, but not as good as through my Sony Blu-ray player (go figure).  They better improve the network a ton if they want to stream games.

More than anything else, the 8GB of RAM is the thing that stands out.... 16x more than the PS3 or XBOX 360...

Can't wait to see what MS is gonna do to respond...

J.

I think they quietly mentioned that most online features will require a subscription, so I suspect download issues may decrease.

But I agree - downloading is hit or miss on my PS3. Took 4 tries over 2 days to merely get an update for Starhawk.

Day 1.
Same here. None of the titles they showed were "must haves" for me, but Sonys refocus on GAMING, as well as developers, and ease of developing have really made a positive impact on me.

Not to mention the hardware spec is ridiculous. I just want a price point of 300-400, but I'll accept 400-500.

I hope Sony keeps the Playstation Plus program. It is a ridiculously good value.

My Vita does a much better job at downloading than my PS3.

Just heard that Sony is going to require that all games that don't use the Eye camera, support remote play on the Vita.

The bummer is that there won't be a Plus 'Instant Game Collection' for PS4 right away because there won't be a library and they won't want to cannibalize sales of all their release titles.  So that will have to start a few months down the road.

It really, really seems like Sony has learned a ton of lessons from the PS3.  Microsoft doesn't seem to have a visionary like Mark Cerny, it kind of seems like the One is design by committee.

Headset jack on the controller!!!

I am also liking what I am hearing from Sony...

Integrating the VRAM in a unified pool should allow the architecture to beat PCs with the same CPU/GPU/RAM specs because bus bottlenecks will be mitigated.

That plus the fact that it's always possible to squeeze more power out of a standardized platform versus millions of PC configurations, well, PS4 could be outshining gaming rigs for years to come.

Maybe.

Having somebody like Mark Cerny spearheading things reminds me of the old Seamus Blackley, J. Allard, Ed Fries days of Microsoft.  With PS3 it felt like the suits were running the show, now I get that feeling from Microsoft.  It's almost like Sony has learned from Microsoft, and that the latter have forgotten their entertainment division roots.

No limits on used games.  No requirement to connect online.

Sony, I like you more than Microsoft right now.

I'll be preordering one as soon as I can. Sony really knocked it out of the park after a slow start.  Sure you need a plus membership for online play but the free games still make it worth it I believe.

Man, I may have to jump off the MS ship and onto Sony's. They really addressed and countered every issue One is getting backlash on and, honestly, the $100 price difference is a big deal.
Title: Re: Official Playstation 4 thread

Yep, I've jumped ship with a PS4 pre-order as well.  I cannot comprehend how MS came up with their DRM crap if it wasn't mandated by game publishers.  It will be very interesting to see what this does to initial sales of both.

Post by: Beer Monkey on June 11, 2013, 03:48:36 PM
I was surprised they didn't push Vita/PS4 integration harder in the presentation.  It's good to see that they are starting 'instant game collection' on PS4 from day one, which I was not expecting so soon.  I already have a PS+ membership (for my Vita) that expires in July 2014, so I get free Drive Club the first month, and then another free PS4 game each month after that.
Title: Re: Official Playstation 4 thread
Post by: adamsappel on June 11, 2013, 04:41:55 PM
I don't think the PS+ game is the full Drive Club. They call it the "PS+ Edition," which my cynical imagination interprets as something like Gran Turismo: Prologue. It's tough to have a full free game at launch, but as time passes we'll be getting the real deal. Vita has gotten a lot of great free games through Plus. It's a fantastic service, well worth the cost, and I regret not getting it sooner.

I'm really looking forward to playing all those unique PSN games via Remote Play.

Ah, makes sense.  I missed that about the plus edition.  Not surprising since it's available at launch.   Once they have some games where the MSRP is < $60 and retailers have made most of their new sales, I'm sure we'll get full titles.

Sony was going to pack the camera in but nixed it to keep the price down.

Honestly, I'm glad they did.  I can't have a camera and/or sensor bar for every system.  I literally don't have the space.  And at the same price, I'd have probably gone with the Xbox One (which I'll still get eventually).

Slightly off topic, but here is what is free to PS+ members in July:

Battlefield 3 (PS3)
Metal Slug XX (PSP, Compatible on PS Vita)
Jet Set Radio (PS3)
Dokuro (PS Vita)
Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee HD (PS3)

This month is actually much weaker than most, but it still illustrates how PS4 users will likely have decent free content each month once the system has been around for a while.  And most of the titles will be remotely playable on Vita (everything except the games that use the Eye).

The more Sony systems you have, the better of a deal Plus becomes.

EDIT:  Also these great sales this month for Plus members only:

Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3) $5.00
Mortal Kombat (Vita or PS3) $5.00
Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (PS3) $4.00
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game (PS3) $2.00
Shadow Of The Colossus (PS3) $4.00
Ratchet & Clank Collection (PS3) $7.50

I've got one pre-ordered as well.  One of my tipping points was that my turtlebeach headset should be compatible with the PS4, but not the XBone.  Also, you can recharge the controller with the included USB cable vs having to buy an extra play-n-charge kit.

I'm grabbing Shadow of the Colossus for sure.  Never played it.

Sooner or later, I'll get to Last of Us but I'm busy catching up on other PS3 games I've been missing out on.  Just started Infamous 2, which I grabbed for free through Plus.

So, Sony is giving $10 credit back for every $50 spent on PSN until October 29.

This means if you buy the digital BF4 for PS3, the $10 upgrade fee is basically covered for you, so you get digital BF4 for PS4 on launch day.  Then you have BF4 on your PS4 forever without having to put a disc in.

If you bought BF4 PS3 and BF4 Premium for PS3 you'd spend $110, get $20 credit back, use $10 of that credit to transfer to PS4 (the game itself, Premium transfers for free), and have $10 credit left over.

BF4 runs with 50% higher resolution on PS4 (versus XB1), more effects/lighting, and a higher average framerate. (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-battlefield-4-next-gen-vs-pc-face-off-preview)

Definitive (console) version confirmed.

In related news, I bought a DualShock 4 and have been using it on my PS3.  I played some Modern Warfare 2 demo on it, and I must say this is a MUCH better controller than the DS4 and is competitive with the 360 controller.  The fit is better for people with man sized hands, the analog triggers are concave and not 'slippery', and the sticks are so dead/loose.  This is a fine controller for the next generation.  I'm actually using it as my primary controller with The Last of Us.

17 days and counting...

And the hits just keep coming.  CoD:Ghosts is 1080p on PS4 but only 720p on Xbox One.

Honestly I'm a bit stunned that Microsoft allowed such a power disparity this gen.  I think they dropped the ball.

You'll probably like this high-def BF4 multiplayer (https://mega.co.nz/#!5B4EGYjA!BwE3nEDuok5QdggK6PQfzntFNHoSSlZtCX5R65sul-0) video capture then.  So smooth.  So detailed.

ONE WEEK!

I'm glad to hear the DS4 works well on the PS3. There's a weird bug with The Last of Us where my original Sixaxis controller sometimes can't start the game. It works fine in every other instance. That coupled with the incredibly long load times has made me put it aside.

Really cool thing I just learned about the DS4 is that you can hook up a stereo headset to it and the game audio is sent there instead of the speakers.  I guess that's a benefit of the bluetooth.  Now, does anyone know if you can control the PS4 with an IR remote, or will we get a repeat of the PS3 fiasco.

Can't connect to PSN though. Since all my games minus Knack and Killzone are digitals, I can't download them at the moment. I'm wicked tired after the midnight launch last night, so I might not play anything tonight, and actually play tomorrow night.

My BF4 was COMPLETELY broken for days (crashed before I could get into a match, did the whole 'you want to upload this crash report' thing).  I deleted and and reinstalled it yesterday and it seems to be working OK now so I'll try to get on soon.

The PS4 OS certainly has had growing pains this week. If only there was some metric whereby Sony could reasonably know how many consoles would be in consumers' hands that first day. If only...

The OS as launched only survived whole for a bit, before some parts were shut down to lessen the load. The "What's New" section scratches a "Gaming Facebook" itch I didn't know I had. It's a little small and redundant now, since a tiny group of friends all playing the same four games yields pretty repetitious updates. Once we're a larger, more diverse PSN community I think it will foster some interesting posts. They've already patched and improved the menus, and Sony seems quick to respond to issues. I think the OS will see steady refinement.

The hardware itself is top-notch. It has a small footprint and it's surprisingly slim. My launch PS3 dwarfs it. The DS4 is such an ergonomic improvement over the Sixaxis it seems more than a generation ahead. There's apparently a rapid-deterioration problem with the rubber coating of the thumbsticks, but the KontrolFreek stick extenders fit just fine. The sticks are tight and springy; the triggers are finally concave and offer more resistance; and the shoulder buttons and triggers are spaced enough that I haven't accidentally hit one for the other.

The included headset is a cheap, flimsy thing, but it will work in a pinch. Unfortunately, my Turtle Beach 'phones aren't quite supported. Apple earpods sound awful and produce feedback. I'm inclined to say Xbox has a better chat service, but I'll wait for us to all have proper equipment. I like that all audio can be sent through the controller.

The launch games are a mixed bag. Battlefield 4 and NFS: Rivals suffer from poor menu design, and BF4 just doesn't work very well online yet. Resogun is the standout title. A brilliant update of Defender, it's a difficult shooter that has a lot of depth. Very fun, and free with PS+.

Well said...you saved me a lot of time doing a review.  ;-)  I'll add that I'm using an old $20 PS3 usb headset and it works great...the one that was packed with the system is garbage.

NBA 2k14 is very good.  The game play is the most realistic game of basketball I've ever played on a console, even though it has been years.  The presentation, graphics, and play by play really draw you in.  Some of the othereise compelling "my career" story pieces are repetitive and cheesy.  I'd give the game an 8.5.

I haven't played Fifa 14 enough to say for sure, but it feels like Fifa 13 with a fresh coat of paint and the difficulty turned up.

Contrast was an excellent PS+ free game.  It is a puzzle game wrapped in a story.  It has one of the more unique game play mechanics I've ever seen though.  The main character exists in both, 3d and 2d as a shadow who can reach difficult locations by climbing shadows.  It was a short 5 hour game, but it was addictive.   I typically hate puzzle games and I beat this in one setting because it was so fun.
