Title: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on April 10, 2005, 03:26:16 PM
Alrighty, I just ordered a copy through GR, so I should have it in a couple of days.† I like what I've read from various reviews.† I was HUGE into Magic: The Gathering back in the mid-90s as well, so the card collecting aspect appeals to me as well.

Allen, I know you have it.† Care to comment?† I'll be looking for a few matches within the week.† And yes, it is 4-players on Live, so it'd be great to find a couple other people to get a full match going.

I have it, though Half-Life 2, Worms 3D and City of Heroes haven't let me put as much time into it as I'd like.  I'd be happy to join in on some multiplayer, though I have no arsenal to speak of.

From the few missions I've played, it seems like a really cool, deep game. It will be nice to attempt this game online with new players of similar skill. I know Lord Darkness and Orpheus play the hell out of it and will seriously kick our asses. And don't let blackcalx plead newbie status on this one. When he's on Live, he's playing this game. Maybe he can show us the ropes, without hanging us, then we can take on the masters.

I believe you don't need to play offline to have an arsenal, it's just filled with random items. If you get deep into the single-player though, you have access to many more weapons.

Jeremy, I also have Magic: The Gathering: Battlegrounds if you'd care to pick that one up as well and cement your uber-nerd status.

I just picked this and Chaos Theory up today. I work FT, go to school nearly FT and have a three year old, so I get to play games like 30 minutes/month, but my tag is Nexteller and if anyone sees me on give me an invite :)

Funny you say that, Allen, because I haven't played Phantom Dust in two weeks.  The last few times I've been on Live have been for Chaos Theory and Worms 3D.

I got sick while playing Phantom Dust and I can't quite get over the association yet.  I think of Phantom Dust and my stomache twists a bit.

My copy should ship today, so hopefully I'll be online with it this coming weekend.  Then, truly, my pitiful skillz will be on display for all to see!

If I can find this locally, maybe I'll pick it up.  I haven't heard much of anything negative about it.

PD arrived yesterday.† Excellent game so far!† I spent a couple hours going through the tutorials and progressing through the campaign.† I believe I'm part way through chapter 2.† Looking forward to building up my bag of tricks a little more and facing you guys online.† Let's schedule some matches soon.

I've had my copy for a week or two now, haven't tried it out yet though.   I'll have to give it a go when I get back into town next week.  Don't want to be left in the dust...

Had some great matches the other night guys.  Allen, play some single player so you can use your own arsenal.  Looking forward to more soon.  Amazing game!!

I will try to give this some time this weekend.  If I do, it would be nice to get an online game going, maybe Saturday?
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 12, 2005, 12:11:33 PM
I'd be up for some this weekend.  Have you played any of the campaign, Matt?  Once you make it to Chapter 3, you'll be able to use custom arsenals online as opposed to random ones.  I'm going to try and progress a little further over the next couple of nights.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: mrpig on May 12, 2005, 01:44:29 PM
Haven't even started the game yet.  I've been kind of busy the last couple of weeks so I've had less time for games that usual.  This weekend I don't have much on my plate other than taking my stepson to a movie.  I'll have a custom arsenal soon enough, so be ready.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust

I HAVE AN ARSENAL!
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: mrpig on May 13, 2005, 11:44:44 AM
I started playing this last night and am in the middle of chapter 2.  Pretty good so far.  I can easily see myself getting confused during a big battle, but that's nothing new.  I like that its a game I can play in front of my stepson.  In fact he might get to play a game or two with me over the weekend.

Is there a way to pause the game and read the info for each skill?  In the heat of battle its kind of hard o figure out what everything does.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 13, 2005, 01:10:28 PM
When you have skills assigned to buttons you press the D-pad in the direction that corresponds with the skill you want more info on.  It'll display all you need to know like range, casting cost, damage etc.  This happens in real-time though so don't take too long, otherwise you could get whacked.

Dave and I fiddled with the trading last night.  It's probably better if we play for a while longer and accumulate more skills.  We can then trade for some rare skills.  Anything of lesser rarity is probably pretty easy to acquire from shops.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: fetterdave on May 13, 2005, 01:35:53 PM
Yeah, I think we could probably pass on trading one- and two-star-rated items.  I'm going to jot down my inventory this weekend anyway, just to have a good idea of my entire stock.

Hey, I said *I* couldn't buy it just then. Don't let my financial straits limit your choices. I'd tell you to buy it now, but apparently online gaming just isn't your bag anymore, baby.

I need to get in on this glut of Phantom Dust.  I desire to expand my arsenal!
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 16, 2005, 05:37:47 PM
I've been playing this a lot over the last couple of days (as many of you have noticed I'm sure).  I am now at the beginning of Chapter 5 and have just opened up the Refinery level.  This game is highly addictive! I just can't stop playing until I collect 'em all!  Amazing that it was so cheap.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: mrpig on May 17, 2005, 03:40:30 PM
I'll second that this game is worthy of topping Carve as best $20 game.  There are a couple of gripes, but they're small.  More maps up front would be nice, as apparently some are unlocked as you progress through single player.  I used to think it would be nice if you could make your own arsenal for online play without having to play through the single player, but now I see why that would suck.  I for one wouldn't know what the hell I was doing without playing the single player a bit first.  I still don't know what I'm doing half the time. as it is.  And lastly, it would be nice if the game supported more than four online at a time, maybe a gallery of sorts at least.  Then again the most I've seen in one room at a time has been three.  All in all I've got to give this game a big thumbís up!

Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: adamsappel on May 18, 2005, 02:41:53 PM
Something has been vexing me. I am vexed! How random are the quick arsenals? I've seen Jeremy get a certain skill (the one where skulls appear over your own skills, the cheeky bastard) too many times for mere chance to account for it. Are there different arsenals for the different characters? Choose Cuff Button and you'll get a different set than Meister? I'd just assumed each one got something from the 300+ available skills. Either the game just got that much deeper, or it's a cheating whore!
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 18, 2005, 03:24:09 PM
I'm not sure about how many arsenals there are in quick mode, but I agree that certain skills come up very often.  I can't say for sure if they always belong to the same arsenal (then my estimate would only be four or five different ones in quick mode) or if just a handful of skills (say 50) get rearranged into slightly different arsenals each time (thereby making it much more difficult to say how many actual arsenals there are in quick mode).

Oh yes, I've been the character "Know" for quite some time now.  Don't hate me for my mad skillz!

My 'rare' skill for 30 wins was a little disappointing.  Twisted Laser (of Optical school).  2 COST; 2 STRENGTH (long range, arc trajectory, infinite uses).  Meh.  I'm only 7 more wins to obtain another skill!

BTW Matt, tell us how much you like Judge of Anubis? ;D
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: mrpig on May 18, 2005, 03:40:02 PM
I vote for Whore.
Especially Jeremy.  Goddamn Judge of Anubis.

That is a good question Allen, and I have know idea.  We'll have to investigate.  I also think that there's more than one skill that have that effect.  Its also possible that any one of us have had that skill to use and had know idea how to use it properly.  Its also likely that Jeremy has a secret room set up code that allows him to obtain kick ass skills while the rest of us are left with the primordial soup of skills.

Post by: fetterdave on May 18, 2005, 03:50:44 PM
All I know is, it's going to take FOREVER for me to master enough skills to truly be great at this game.  I just spent some time reviewing them at http://www.phantom-dust.com/skills.php and now my brain hurts.

Also, in looking at that chart, can any of you tell me what the "V" column denotes?

It indicates whether a particular skill has a video showing you what it looks like.  If it doesn't have a dot in the column, it's just a still shot.

Well, that's an odd choice for "things we need to show in the chart"...

For a real treat, check out the Forums on that site.  Makes me very happy that Allen pulled me into this circle of Live players, rather than having to fend for myself...

I don't know why I never noticed this, considering it's on the back of the box, but the game supports custom soundtracks, too.

I've put 18 hours into this game and only completed 31 of 100 missions. I don't know if that includes online time, but I doubt it. The game is deep.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 21, 2005, 04:41:32 PM
Yep, I've had my custom tracks going for quite some time. :)  The last I played, I think I was at about the 22 hr. mark with around 62 completed missions.

I'll be back around Monday night for some gaming.

Post by: adamsappel on May 21, 2005, 04:53:21 PM
I finally got around to reading my memory boxes. Some good stuff in there. Turns out you can heal teammates, which would have been nice to know previously. Stand over them and assign them to a skill button and when you press it, they revive at half-health.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: adamsappel on May 23, 2005, 08:37:14 PM
There's some cool stat-tracking here, too. I've played for 22 hours, 22 minutes and 58 seconds. I've completed 41 missions. I had to attempt those missions 107 times! One mission - "Sky-Colored Paints" - took me 17 tries. I defeated 81 enemies and have attained 240 skills.

Another fun time last night guys - this game never gets old!  It'll be great to get access to a few more levels.

I'm planning on more arsenal building/tweaking as well.  I'm completely into this aspect of PD.  Last night, my new arsenal didn't win any matches against Matt.  The great part of this is that I immediately went and changed three skills that I identified as not working well, or that I needed to add.  We'll play again and if it still doesn't perform well, I'll change a few more things that aren't working.

Holy shit, the battle at the end of Chapter 6 is brutal!  Finally made it past after many attempts (and a few necessary arsenal tweaks).  I have another level available in multiplayer now with a couple more to come shortly I'm sure.  I'm at mission 98.

Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: mrpig on May 30, 2005, 01:41:58 AM
Well, 114 out of 114 missions, just shy of 47 hours.  I've talked to everybody and no one has any missions so I think I'm done.  Right now I have 292 out of 300 skills, so I need to do a few more simulations to earn the rest.  I only have 2 online skills.  I hope to have 5 before I'm sick of the game.  That leaves what, 59?

This has to be the best $20 game I've ever purchased.  If you don't own it,  :P
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 30, 2005, 08:22:52 AM
What eight skills do you need, Matt?  I may have extras to trade.  Give me until the end of today...I should have it completed as well.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: mrpig on May 30, 2005, 03:08:29 PM
Right now I'm missing:

154 - Gaurd of Water
163 - Desertification
167 - Berserk
295 - Annoying Gift

Every now and then after a simulation battle another new skill becomes available, but it's slow going.  You finish it yet?

edit:  two to go.  went to a friends for a bbq this afternoon, hopefully I'll get the other tow tonight.  If not, I'll be looking to trade.

edit 2:  Now I have them all thanks to Jeremy!  Now that I have them all what the hell am I going to do with them?
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 30, 2005, 03:19:56 PM
Not quite yet....but I've got Annoying Gift and Desertification I believe.

EDIT:  Just checked, I only have 1 copy of Desertification and Guard of Water.  I'll see what I've got at the end.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on May 30, 2005, 08:23:37 PM
Well, just finished.  114/114 missions completed.  47h 1m 24sec.

I need three skills to complete the list of 300:

180 - Orb
264 - Sign of Saints
299 - Amulet

Can anyone trade me these?  Trial and error with the shops could take a while!  Matt, I definitely have an extra Annoying Gift and Desertification if you still need them.

EDIT:  Got 'em all!

I've completed 55 missions so far, in about 40 hours. Maybe I played GTA3 for this long, but other than that it's the most hours I've ever put into a single game.

Game of the Year. Hell, maybe Game of the Console.

Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: Failsafe on June 08, 2005, 03:22:25 PM
If you want to be able to create your own custom arsenals to battle with, you'll need to be into Chapter 3 in the single player campaign.  I'd say that would take you 3 - 4 hours.  Chapters 1 & 2 are excellent anyway, as they teach you all you need to know about the game.  Bryan's right though, you'll want to progress through as much as you can to obtain more skills.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: adamsappel on June 08, 2005, 04:18:03 PM
I just reached Chapter 5. Interesting story twist!

Jeff, you don't need any single-player time to play online. We can use "random arsenals" and teach you the ropes as we play.
Title: Re: Phantom Dust
Post by: mrpig on June 08, 2005, 04:24:05 PM
Allen, you just want to kick Jeff's ass around a bit, admit it.

Jeff, you will need to dedicate some time to this game, but like God of War, once you start playing you won't want to stop.

Woo-hoo!  Chapter 7, bay-bee!

Once I finally picked the right arsenal, the triple-Freia fight wasn't too bad.  My goal now is to finish the story by the end of the week.  Then, it's on to Psychonauts... hopefully.

No.   I've seen it once one time when I hung out at Jeremy's place (proven failsafe) but I have no idea what it is about or anything.  Saw it used once at an EB store, but they wanted $29.99 CAN for a used copy.  I might consider picking it up but I don't have anybody to play against so I left it.

Single player is done very well, and it does support 2 player split screen (as well as 4 player link/LIVE)

Simplest way for me to explain it. 300 spells and abilities to eventually unlock and learn (think MTG cards) You have to make a 'deck' out of spells and aura particles (mana). Your deck is randomized and your spells and aura show up physically in the game environment and you have to pick them up. You battle the enemy in real time with destructible environments. It's mostly direct damage, but there are some neat flying and other types of spells. (no creature summons though). Definitely worth a look if you can find it cheap.

As a CCG nerd, you owe it to yourself to play this one, Greg. One of my favorite Xbox games. TRU in the US has it for $10, and TRU Canada is having a BOGO sale right now, so you may be in luck. Let me know if you can't find it locally and I'll pick you up a copy down here.

It is truly an amazing game and one that I can remember Matt, Allen, Dave and myself putting many hours into both offline and online.  Just taking a read back through this thread reminded me of how much I got into it.  Even if you don't plan to take it online at all, the single player and local split-screen make it more than worth the money.
