So that means that all of us who bought a launch system still have 2 months of warranty left?

Yes, and in that time I suggest buying a 1-year protection plan (you can add another year later).

That's not a bad idea.  I'll have to think on that a bit.  I'm guessing it's $50?

I'm a bad guesser.

I know I can always return my 360 to Costco if I have any trouble, but that means sacrificing my hard drive.  That would tough to do.

Don't forget to pay your bear tax too in case of a bear attack. ;)

So, is that all I have to do to get the 1-year protection plan, call that 1-800 number and buy it over the phone?

There's a lot of mixed messages flying around the internets.

Some say that you can't order a new 1-year even though they extended the initial warranty.  Some even claim that they have been told (by CSR on the phone) that MS is going to fix, for free, launch units even after that first year is up for some undetermined period of time.

I'm seriously thinking about doing some heavy load testing on my system to see if it fails.  Maybe run an Xbox 1 game (the emulator taxes the system heavily) for days on end.  Load up Splinter Cell and apply a rubber band to the controller so that Sam spins in never ending circles.

I think playing Oblivion for 160 hours was a pretty good test for my 360.  That game does a lot of loading.

This is obviously an attempt to head off a class action suit. It's mainly to placate people who have already had repairs done. You don't have to do anything to activate the full year warranty or get your repair refund, they are automatic, but you should call tonight with your serial number and say you want the extended protection plan. Ask to speak to a supervisor. If your 2005 console is truly under a new warranty, there is no reason you can't buy further coverage until at least November.
