Tony Scott (Hollywood director of Crimson Tide, Top Gun, my favorite of his, The Hunger, and the recent Unstoppable; also brother of Ridley Scott) commits suicide off Long Beach bridge.

Quote
Director Tony Scott jumped off the Vincent Thomas bridge near Long Beach on Sunday and died from his injuries.

The Los Angeles coroner confirmed to TheWrap that Anthony David Scott of Beverly Hills jumped off the bridge and died on Sunday. That is Scott's full name, and the British-born director has lived in Los Angeles for many years.

The U.S. Coast Guard told The Daily Breeze that a suicide note was found inside Scott's black Toyota Prius, which was parked on one of the eastbound lanes of the bridge.

Scott is a well-known Hollywood director who is best known for high-octane action movies including "Top Gun," "Crimson Tide" and many other hit movies. He is the brother of Ridley Scott, another prominent director, both born in England. They are partners in a production company, Scott Free Productions.

His most recent movies were "Unstoppable" and "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3."

He was also in the process of exploring a sequel to his biggest hit, "Top Gun 2."

The Vincent Thomas Bridge is a suspension bridge over Los Angeles Harbor that links San Pedro with Terminal Island. It appears frequently in films and television.

Other recent passings:
Ron Palillo (Horshack from Welcome Back, Kotter)
Helen Gurly Brown (cryptkeeper; editor of Vogue)
Mel Stuart (Director of Willy Wonka; that ferry scene is going to stick with me forever)
Marvin Hamlish (iconic Broadway composer; The Sting is a fantastic soundtrack (with credit to Scott Joplin, of course))
Gore Vidal (author and essayist; racist WASP; I'll always remember him as the author of Caligula!)
Sally Ride (first female astronaut; possibly first gay astronaut)
Richard Zanuck (Hollywood producer of Jaws, Driving Miss Daisy)
Ernest Borgnine (actor, Marty, McHale's Navy, which I watched after school)
Harry Harrison (author, Stainless Steel Rat series, Make Room! Make Room!, terribly/awesomely-titled basis for Soylent Green; I'm sad, he was one of my favorites)

Man that makes me sad to hear about Tony Scott. I wonder what drove him to do such a thing...

Apparently, Tony Scott had inoperable brain cancer. I doubt that is an easy prognosis or death, particularly for someone creative.
