Zune
« on: December 04, 2006, 11:36:33 AM »

I don't have any need for a Zune, but have heard generally positive impressions of the device. It seems typical for a first-gen Microsoft product: a few hits, a few strikes, hope for a better version to come along soon. The "sharing music via wifi" is interesting, though they hobbled that with "3 plays or 3 days." Well, if this webcomic is true, the upgrade just got released.

I can't say I've heard any positive comments about the Zune. Granted, the only places I've read/heard about it is on digg and TWiT - not the most pro-MS places around. Maybe I need to join the social?

Actually, some of the podcasts have been pretty complimentary about the form factor, display size, and user interface.  It's usually the DRM scheme, the royalties to Universal, the abandonment of Fairplay, and other stuff that turns them against it.

A lot of the really geeky podcasts out there are very anti-iTunes-Music-Store as well.

Screen's nice and big, it's indented, body is more scratch-resistant, interface is nice, wifi capability, radio. The biggest complaints seem to be on the PC side, installing the software and using the music service.

My reasons for not getting a Zune:

1.  30 GB max (right now).  I have my eye on the 80 GB iPod, hoping for 100 GB.

2.  More DRM to deal with.

3.  What would I do with the few songs I did buy from iTunes?

4.  Why would I want the first gen media player for MS?

It does look nice though and I like the widescreen.

Burn them to a CD and then rip them under the Zune software.

I hate Windows Media Player enough to not have to deal with anything that plays with it.  Does the Zune play with it?

Not that I plan on using Vista any time soon, but I had also heard that the Zune wasn't Vista compatable, is that true?

I had heard that when someone tries to share your music or music with you, your music stops playing.  That's pretty much a deal breaker for me.

Zune has been compatible with Vista since December 2006. It is not compatible with Mac.

My iPod is acting up occasionally and I have a replacement plan.  If Zune wants consideration when I inevitably get my 'free' upgrade, they need to get a model with at least 120GB and gapless playback (not sure if the new Zune has gapless, the old one did not).  Otherwise I'll get an iPod Classic with 160gb.

I've got a big woodie over the new 3.0 120gb Zune and I'm probably going to have to do something about it.

Anybody want to buy a 60GB iPod video?  Works perfectly.

What about it has your panties in a knot?

Same price as the new 120GB Classic iPod but it can sync to your pc via wi-fi, you can use their marketplace via wi-fi hotspots including getting the latest episodes of podcasts, it has an FM tuner (and you can click a song playing on FM to buy it the next time you sync), it has built-in support and syncing for Audible.com books. etc.

Apple wants to save all of their cool features for the touch but that leaves the people who want the big HDD units out in the cold.  Zune is filling that gap and honestly crushes the iPod classic.

It's also rated on the audiophile sites as having better sound quality than the iPod, and I can relate to that because my old Rio Karma certainly did.

Oh, and it comes with Hexic pre-installed.   :P

And the nice large wide screen for video.
