Other than that, what?

Better Xbox 360 integration and the ability to watch shows you record with Windows Media Center?

I think it shows how awesome Microsoft can be at making functionality when they are getting their ass kicked.  First 360, now Zune.  Hopefully they stay in last place forever.  The best stuff coming out of Redmond is in the markets that they don't dominate.

Then again, their phone and PDA stuff is pretty weak compared to iPhone/Blackberry/Google/Palm, so maybe the theory doesn't always hold up.

That does sound pretty tempting.  I'm stuck with iTunes for now though, having purchased music from it.  Stupid DRM.

Don't forget that a simple burn to CD and re-rip totally negates the DRM. I have all my Itunes purchased items on my Zune. (at the expense of a stack of CD-Rs - at least they're dirt cheap now)

True, but that does lessen the quality a bit doesn't it?

Probably to an audiophile, but I personally can't tell any difference in normal, everyday usage.

Wow, they've tweaked the Zune Pass so that you get to keep 10 songs every month, so basically you are only paying $5 for the service itself.

I'd have never considered the old plan but this is something that I'll actually give a try.

Also, DRM-free is rocking!

The week just keep getting better for Zune owners: today we’re announcing some amazing enhancements for Zune Pass (link to zunepass description on .net).

Starting today at about 11:00PM pacific time, everyone with a Zune Pass gets to keep 10 tracks from Zune Marketplace each month. These 10 tracks will be yours to keep, forever. Each month that you keep your Zune Pass current, you’ll get another 10 tracks credited to your account. All this for the same price as your Zune Pass today: 14.99/month, or about the price of one CD per month. So each month as you discover and download new music in Zune Marketplace, you’ll be able to keep 10 of your favorite tracks. One quick note: there is no roll-over, so make sure you collect your 10 tracks each month.

Which brings up the second bit of good news: now approximately (90%) of the 4+ million tracks in Zune Marketplace are available as DRM-free MP3s. We’ve got MP3s from , Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, as well as indie distributors IODA and The Orchard.

That is pretty tempting.  I may have to go with a Zune next time I upgrade.

I've got a bunch of money in Paypal from recent auctions so I just bought a new one on eBay from a buy-it-now seller.  I used the Live.com search for the 25% cashback, so once I get my rebate in a couple months the out of pocket cost for my 120GB Zune is only $180.

Not to mention the money I'll get from selling my 60GB iPod.

If the Zune had Mac support, I'm sure I would have picked one up. Prior to the iPhone, it had a nicer screen than iPod, better audio output, cheaper, etc. I'm not really a fan of subscription services, but keeping 10 songs per month is a great deal. Still, now with the iPhone and Simplify Media, I'm pretty covered as far as song selection.

Oh, I'd probably be using the iPhone or Google phone for my music player if they had big hard drives and monstrous battery life.  It totally depends on the user and what they need.  Just the fact that Apple has introduced a new120GB iPod Classic shows that even they know that one size can't fit all.  It's just a shame that they don't want to add any useful new features to the Classic.  If competition worked they'd probably be forced to but so many people will buy just based on the name and/or the fact that they feel handcuffed to existing iTunes Store DRM music (I've been warning everybody for years, don't buy that shit!).  ;)

I'd say about 90% of the iTunes stuff I've purchased was done with iTunes giftcards.  Now if I actually buy downloadable music it's from Amazon.  That said I still prefer buying the CD and ripping it.

Also, as much as I like how fast the flash based player work, I still like the larger capacity HDD based players.  I like having a selection and the longer battery life.  Right now I have an 80GB video iPod.  I'd use my G1 for music but the battery life isn't all that great.  My only complaint so far.

Various articles have confirmed that you can get your 10 songs each month in DRM-free MP3.  :)
