Drink. More. Water!
« on: March 03, 2007, 01:30:58 AM »

I just passed my first kidney stone. Worst pain of my entire life (I'm 40). It felt like someone was twisting a knife in my lower belly while simultaneously kicking me in the balls. Appendicitis was a mere upset tummy in comparison. I was screaming into a pillow and in tears of pain. I threw up a few times. It felt a little better to stand or sit on the toilet and try to piss. Try. A few painful dribbles at a time (twss). After a couple hours when my wife got home and took me to the ER, it mostly stopped hurting and I passed it into a specimen cup. My piss was orange and there was a bloody sand-grain-sized jagged little pill at the bottom. Hurt coming out, but wasn't near as painful as before.

I drink A LOT of Pepsi One, I guess I'm going to have to cut it way back. More water, OJ, cran, POM, etc. I've been on an imported Ramen kick for a bit, too, and that surely didn't help.

Drink more water, don't let it happen to you.

Bless you.

I read a book that described that experience in this way:

Take the McDonald's golden arches and tie them into a pretzel knot.  Then coat them in an acid-based adhesive affixed with a thousand carrot pelers pointing straight out.  Follow that up by removing the head off fourteen life-size replicas of the Statue of Liberty and affix those heads with the pointy helmets on each corner of the apparatus.  The next step would be to set the entire device aflame.

Now shove it up your urethra.

At the time, I thought the guy was just exagerating.  But it sounds about like the pain you went through.  Bless you.  Bless you.  Bless you.

Seriously, I hope that's the last of it and that your...well...stuff is feeling better soon.

Quote came from Mark Steele's "Flashbang" - wouldn't recommend it.

So it's the childbirth of male pain? Ouch. I'm having a tall glass of H2O for my fallen brother right now. Keep it flowing, my friends.

Ouch, that sucks.  :(

My mom passed a couple in her late 20s and early 30s.  She said it was worse than childbirth.

I fear this kind of thing.  I used to drink cranberry juice all the time, maybe it is time to start again.

Glad to hear you're on the mend now.   I remember my gr. 7 math/gym teacher had one and the nurse at the hospital told him it was child birth for men.   It's something I think everyone needs to worry about.   I drink way more water than I used to and it definitely helps.

Ever since hearing that water flushes all sorts of stuff out of your system after a bout with skin cancer and high blood pressure, I have had like a gallon a day. This is another reason. Glad you are on the mend!

She said it was worse than childbirth.

Although a man will never know the pain of childbirth, if the above is true just consider how much longer a man's urethra is compared to a woman's.  I'm having a beer for you Allen.

p.s. When I'm not drinking beer I drink a lot of water, mostly carbonated but also plain.

Forget the eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day rubbish.  It's just a guideline.

The actual recommended amount of water for optimum health is: half your body weight, in ounces, per day.

Therefore a 200lb. man should be drinking 100 oz. of filtered pure H2O every day.

Iced tea doesn't count.
Coffee doesn't count.
Beer reeeeaaally doesn't count.

Even if it's mostly water, or you mix it with water, it's not water.

Matt, carbonated will get the job done, but plain is the best (too much CO2)....

Ouch! I hope you're feeling better, Allen. I can't imagine what the pain of a kidney stone is like but it sounds horrible! Ughhh...not fun. I've had a few bladder infections before and I thought those were bad but this sounds way worse!

I've actually been doing some reading up on cranberry juice and its benefits. Its great for your bladder, kidneys, etc. I also read its better to take cranberry supplements though...something about the juice not having a high concentration of cranberry extract (and juice is usually high in sugar) or whatever the key ingredient is that makes cranberries so wonderful.

Water is great too of course.  :D

The Deadwood episodes where Al had to deal with a kidney stone were so painful to watch.  I can't imagine what that would be like to go through in real life.  Hope you are feeling better Allen.

Glad to hear you're doing better.  I drink more Red Bull than water, so I guess I can expect a golfball sized kidney stone.  Or I could start drinking more water and cross my fingers.

I'm fine. I drink lots more water and only about one soda a day. Eating anything salty kind of unnerves me (I had just eaten some Fritos before it started). In a strange coincidence, my stepfather had also passed a kidney stone on the same day. He said it made a distinctive plink against the toilet bowl, so I certainly could have had it worse.
