And, weather permitting (because it's that time of year), Jeremy and I will be making another trip to Michigan this weekend
.
It's time to start Christmas shopping (ughh...I can't believe it's that time already!).

Is it December 24 already?
While the dollar is really good, you have to be careful with big ticket items across the border. Unless a TV is made in North America, it's not duty free. Video games though are duty free.
My boss just bought himself a used Corvette in the States and saved a BUNDLE, especially since it's made in North America and is duty free. New cars are not allowed to be bought in the States and brought into Canada. Some used cars aren't either if they are on the no-import list, such as Ferraris. While I realize those aren't every day cars, other companies such as BMW are trying to get on that list too.

I wish wine was duty-free. Or that the LCBO would quit raping us with the prices they charge on imported wines. Last time I was in the states, I noticed a 50% price difference in some cases with international wines (i.e. Yellow Tail wine, which is imported from Australia). Rarely do we spend the night when we go to Michigan, meaning I can't bring any wine back with me (I think you have to be over there for 24 hours or more before you bring any alcohol back)
.
My uncle, who owns a bookstore in Goderich, was telling me today they've started reducing magazine prices here as well as book prices. The main reason for the reductions? Wal-Mart Canada has been complaining, apparently. He noticed yesterday when magazines came in that there was a reduced price on some of them. He's also taken to discounting some of his books as well to bring them closer to the American prices. Being a small business though, he can't sell them for the American price or else he'd be losing money.
The dollar closed today at $1.07.
Oh, and my Christmas shopping will be done before December 24th this year. My goal: December 1st

It's 48 hours before you can bring back one case of beer, two bottles of wine or one bottle of the hard stuff.
The reason the wine and other liquor prices are so bad up here is because of taxes, we can only buy booze from government controlled stores and we also have the lovely deposit system now too on everything, not just beer.

I was wondering about that. Because that's the way of bringing stuff back to the states. Whenever The Wife and I would go out to Stratford, we'd stop at this great fruit wine distillery and bring back a couple of bottles of fruit wine.
A carton of cigarettes are duty-free after 24 hours, but the duty free prices didn't use to be that great, from what I remembered from my smoking days. Definitely not as good as reservation prcies. Definitely not as good.

Stratford? As in Stratford, Ontario? I'm doing an internship at the archives there until December. Really nice city!

As in Stratford, Ontario. We used to go to the
Shakespeare Festival
yearly (sometimes twice a year). I love that town.

Is there an American beer that you prefer over a Canadian beer? I've never been to Canada, but when I lived in Binghamton, and one of my buddies was going, we always had them bring back a case or two of Canadian beer. I never imagined it working the other way, as Canadian beer is so much better.

Yeah, I've been to the Festival a few times myself. Great plays! The town is beautiful; I usually go for a half-hour walk along the river everyday at lunch. There's also lots of great shops in the downtown area as well.
Hell is being raised here though because Wal-Mart wants to set up shop
.
If you guys are ever in Stratford again, and you want to meet up for lunch or something, let Jeremy (Failsafe) or I know. We live in Goderich, which is only about an hour (well, about 50 minutes) away from Stratford.

I think Sean might be quite knowlegable when it comes to American beer
.
Sorry Sean, couldn't resist!

I guess the question would be more like is there an American beer you can't get in Canada?
I used to hate on a majority of American brews, but right now I'm enamored on Yuengling and the stuff from Magic Hat. The Saranac breweries are pretty good and there's some good Ithaca brews (not the Apricot Wheat oh god the humanity).
But then again, the town I live in is famous for one of the shittiest beers I've ever passed over my taste buds. No amount of crappy cigars killed that.

That whole town was good times. Every couple of months I fiend for a sandwich from the sub shop that's like a closet. I can't remember the name of it, but they have a togo window. And we used to eat at the Stratford Pub everytime. Good times. If we manage to make it up there, I'll let you know.

Better than the mainstream stuff like Budweiser/Miller/Coors, or better than good premium/micros like Left Hand, Rogue, Anchor? The former isn't really saying very much.

For the record: Phantom and I work for the same company here in Rochester, NY. However, we've never actually met (which is getting pretty ridiculous at this point).
So, we've actually created a little western NY/Ontario enclave up here that rivals those Charlotte folks'.

Is Sleeman's Canadian? I was pleasantly surprised by Sleeman's.
Molson and Labatt's is pretty darned good for the price. You do have to take price into the equation. And especially compared to the American Mainstream.

I see it as a challenge to see how long we can keep that going.
