This is fodder for the Jay Leno schtick about how lazy Americans are...

More than iTunes was?   :)

I bit the bullet and ordered a Kindle.  I've decided that I need to try this one first-hand, I'll use the 30-day return policy if it doesn't blow my socks off.  I'll have my end-of-year bonus by the time the credit card bill is due, so what the heck.

I will certainly want to hear impressions. What's the estimated ship date?

and actually the background is in color - a sort of pale pea soup green.  It's rather unattractive IMO.)

The new v2 screens that they've been using since October have more contast with brighter 'whites' and darker darks but it is true that the color is absolutely not a true white.
Yep.  Seen 'em.  Better.  Still green.

Ebooks, iTunes, it's obviously all part of the coming police state.   ;)

If anything, the digital era has made it harder to control information than ever.  Look at the complete failure of the entertainment industry to police piracy, China's inability to keep up with filtering 'net access to sites like Wikipedia (many known workarounds exist and are constantly evolving), and so on.  'Information wants to be free' isn't just a meme, it's a reality.  The sword has two edges.

Order cancelled, I got confirmation from somebody who has a Kindle and both generations of the Sony Reader that the Kindle is using the lastgen display with the weaker contrast.  At $399, I expect the best.  Oh well.

Even if you had to manually sync it every morning, I'd love to see the Sony get the newspaper subscriptions.

That surprises me after watching th embedded videos on the Kindle page at Amazon last night.  They made it sound like the second coming.  They even implied that fools would forget they were holding a book.

I saw a Sony Reader in Borders today. I thought it was just a mock-up display model, and the "page" on the screen was a cut-out page from a real book. The e-ink display really is impressive. I think the black-to-white screen refresh with every page turn would get annoying, but that tech will advance quickly. The cost of books is getting so high that I can see the justification for spending this much. For some reason, they've come up with a new size of paperback, taller than usual, and costs $9.99.

We have libraries here. They give you a free card and then let you rent books for free with that card. They are Nazi like with late fees, but other than that it is pretty sweet.

Our Nazi fee is like 10 cents per day at the Canton library...  ;)
