I really liked this year's show.  Stewart was better than last time, although I thought he did a good job then too.

I also can't disagree with too many picks beyond maybe the Golden Compass.  Tilda Swinton had maybe one of the best acceptance speeches of the night.

I'm guessing that was the result of a vote split between Transformers and PotC: AW'sE.

Also, I think it wasn't so much that Stewart was better (he was), but that everyone in the room realized it was okay to laugh at themselves.

Well, the 'In Memoriam' left out Brad Renfro and Roy Scheider (it said Feb. 1/07 - Jan. 31/08).  I noticed they stopped requesting that everyone save their applause until the end.

I forgot about Roy Schieder, but I definitely noticed no Brad Renfro at the time. Big-time snubs there.

You can't really call Scheider's omission a snub, though.

Why? Did he die outside of the date range?

Why they wouldn't just include everyone up to the day before the ceremony is beyond me.  They can edit these things together in a flash.  The varying degrees of applause for each person always disturbs me.

The fact that there is applause disturbs me.  I guess people on the West Coast on board the "GRATS FOR DYING!" bandwagon.

I know it's a "symbol" of "respect" or something.  But that's my first impression.

I watched There Will Be Blood finally. Great movie. I still think I liked VM's work in Eastern Promises better than DDL's. Maybe if I had not seen the great parodies of "I've abandoned my child!" and "I drink your milkshake," I would have been more impressed. Especially after the SNL skit, it was hard to watch those scenes without thinking the character is just silly and DDL is just screaming in a convincing manner.

They did give Al Pacino an Oscar for that as well.

Too right, Phantom!  :)

Did they give that guy in your avatar an Oscar as well?

I believe he was nominated.

The Academy likes big out loud performances.

However, I'll hold that Peter Finch's performance in Network is better than Al Pacino's in Scent of a Woman.

EDIT: Double checked.  He won it. First posthumous nomination and award apparently.

Quote
Oscar organizers' shock announcement Wednesday that they will double the number of best picture nominees to 10 for next year's Oscar ceremony is both a shrewd marketing move and a questionable policy change.

Link.

Quote
The 82nd Academy Awards, which will be presented on March 7, 2010, will have 10 feature films vying in the Best Picture category, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis announced today (June 24) at a press conference in Beverly Hills.

Link.

Seems like this is a way to stick in pictures that will never win, but might be more recognizable to a wider audience. I'm thinking The Dark Knight and Wall-E from 2008 specifically.

A way to label more pictures as "BEST PICTURE NOMINEE" in their advertising, but that fits in really well with the Academy.  Their purpose is not to recognize true quality, it is to promote the industry.  This is just a way to drive up ticket sales and disc sales.
