Joystiq goes hands-on with Uncharted 2 Multiplayer

Quote
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has multiplayer. Not just any multiplayer, mind you, but three-player (!) co-op, plus five-on-five Deathmatch and a mode called "Plunder."

Uncharted 2 Multplayer Demo available on PSNetwork

Quote
It includes not one but four different maps, four competitive modes, and two co-operative modes, meaning it's a great deal more than the dinky multiplayer beta had to offer. The demo also includes Cinema, allowing players to view and share their multiplayer match replays, along with a Stage map that's perfect for creating your own machinima videos.

I really enjoyed Uncharted 1, so I may have to give this a whirl.  I'll get the download tonight when I get home I think.

If you've noticed the foaming-at-the-mouth, sky-high reviews of the last few days, this line from Tycho on Penny Arcade will please you:

Anyone tried the co-op in the demo yet? I loaded up the demo this morning, and was able to run around a deathmatch map by myself, but when I tried to load co-op, it said I didn't have enough players.

Ok, I'm looking forward to this, and I will most likely pick it up today. But I do think the number of glowing reviews for it are a little suspect. I like this comment from the GamePro review.

Quote
The A.I. is a little suspect, the camera can be stubborn, and you will die your fair share of cheap deaths.

They gave it a 100. 5 out of 5

And 22 other publications gave it a perfect their top score as well.

Guess we'll see.

Gamepro bases their reviews on a 5 star system.

Ok, that makes more sense. Updated my comment.

Ok, I didn't complain about this during beta, because I wanted to see what the full version would have.

Well, you can't play survival mode (humans vs waves of AI) alone. You have to be in a party.

I just don't understand the thought process there. They will allow you to load up a Deathmatch level by yourself, which (other than to learn the level) , there is no real reason to do so. But a game mode with AI, you are forced to play with someone else.

Is it too hard to play alone? Possibly - some of the ODST levels are tough alone. But you can play Firefight alone. You can play Horde alone. I just don't understand this design decision.

Sorry for the rant. I just can't figure it out.

Rant aside - the SP starts off right. No long FMV sequences to sit through. You're off and playing very quickly.

That sounds like it ranks right up there with not being able to join ODST Firefights in progress.

Ok, I've played all of chapter 1 and the beginning of chatper 2. I've enjoyed it a lot so far. It's definitely got that "summer blockbuster" feel to it. It's totally over the top, but in a great popcorn-and-coke movie theater way. The controls feel solid and I didn't even worry that I wasn't using the 360 controller (like I did in Killzone 2).

Multiplayer is really good, but not amazing. To be fair, I only played Survival and Co-op, so I can't comment on deathmatch. It's cool that you have all of your single player abilities like climbing in multiplayer. There's also a ton of animations like pulling enemies off of ledges, pushing them off, pulling them around a corner - stuff like that. My only gripe with multiplayer is the ammo/weapon pickup system. It's really the same as Gears, but it's problematic because there seem to be so many more weapons and ammo that's dropped. The problem is that you use the same key (triangle) to pick up ammo and weapons. When theres a pile of both, more often than not you end up just picking up a new weapon (ditching your old one) instead of grabbing ammo. Also, when an enemy grapples with you, you have to hit a button repeatedly - guess which one - the triangle. So 99.9% of the time when you escape an enemies grapple, which knocks him out, you end up swapping weapons with him. It's very frustrating.

And for some reason, I was having trouble with the hud system in respects to locating my co-op partner. It seems like it's the same as most other games, but in practice I was just having trouble with it.

These gripes aside, the multiplayer was a lot of fun. Co-op missions were punishingly difficult. We barely made it through 2 checkpoints on normal. On easy we made it further, but still didn't finish the mission! Explosions and ragdoll are pretty sweet in the game as well.

Oh, and my last gripe isn't about this game - but PSNetwork in general. Playing with the bluetooth headset just sucks. First, I couldn't even send him an invite while he was playing SP and I was in MP. We had to both be in MP before I could invite him. Then when we were in the party, the bluetooth headset connect just blew. After about 10 minutes of shouting and hearing every 3rd word, we just switched to cellphones.

Yeah, free PSN is so much better than LIVE.

Uncharted 2 is a good game. I'm enjoying it.

This is on my birthday list.  Actually I never played all the way through the first one.  Now that it's cheaper I should pick it up.  Of course then I need time to play...
