How is your high speed Internet?
« on: June 23, 2005, 02:29:04 PM »

I'm curious what other people's download/upload are with different ISPs.  Also, how does your actual speed (up and down) compare with what the company claims you will get.

For me:

Bluewater Cable TV:
Claim - 3Mb down / 256k up
Actual - 1.7Mb down (approximate) / 150k up

This was my old high speed.  As of this morning, I've scaled the account to their 'lite' service, which now sees me achieving approximately 128k down / 50-60k up.  I'll be up and running with full high speed again in another week and a half, but until then, I probably can't even play on Live with these speeds.  :(

Comcast: Speed Tier

Claim: 6000/768
Modem Caps: 6600/768

I download at around 800kB/s which puts me at about 6550kbps  down and upload around 92kB/s or roughly 753kbps. The rest is overhead.  Thats about as good as it gets.

I haven't tested in a while.   I'm supposed to get 3mbit down and 768kbit up on my DSL, and I typically get 2.5mbit down and 600kbit up.   Most of my friends have Road Runner but their upload isn't as reliable as mine, so it's not good for hosting (at least in their neighborhoods).

This summer we are supposed to get new options including a faster tier and naked DSL.

Frankly, I don't care too much about more download, I just want more upload.

I think we'll get fiber within five years.  :(

Adelphia Cable

Claim - 6Mb down / 768k up
Actual - 7692k down / 854k up

Recommended number of players when I host a terrorist hunt in RS3 - two. I just don't get it. It sure seems like I've got the speed. Do certain routers not work well with the Xbox? I use the Netgear MR814v2.

Could be packet loss.

My results from BBR:

Quote
2005-06-23 18:37:10 EST: 1451 / 243
Your download speed : 1486571 bps, or1451 kbps.
A 181.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 249375 bps, or243 kbps .

My cable company (Comporium Communications) claims 1.5 down and 250 up, so it's just about right on.  It's also why I don't host much.....

Is that something I can fix?

Just tested my new line speed at BB Reports:

Your download speed : 126030 bps, or 123 kbps.
A 15.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 50412 bps, or 49 kbps.

Ouch!  Maybe I'll try a game out tonight and see how badly I can screw up everyone's evening.  ;)

I wouldn't rely too heavily on the java based speedtests on BBR or anywhere else. They're not always accurate and tend to get bogged down with users. Because of that they are not able to handle your max. speeds.

Try downloading the OOL 64 Meg test file.

Wait for the download to hits 50% and take the k/s given and multiply by 8.192.

You can also use DU Meter, NetPerSec or Net Stat Live to monitor your speeds.

Cox is rolling out a 15Mbps/2Mbps package also. Adelphia has started offering a 16Mbps/2Mbps tier. Both in Virginia right now.

Some of these numbers are astounding (to me anyway).  Do these companies charge a premium for this kind of speed?
