New from Apple...

iPod nano

Quote
A revolutionary full-featured iPod, iPod nano holds 1,000 songs yet is thinner than a standard #2 pencil and less than half the size of competitive players. The iPod nano features an ultra-portable, lightweight design with a gorgeous color screen, Apple’s patent-pending Click Wheel and the ability to hold 1,000 songs or 25,000 photos. The iPod nano is available immediately in a 4GB or 2GB model, available in stunning white or black designs.

iTunes 5

Quote
iTunes 5 sports a new refined look and includes a new Search Bar to make it even easier for users to find what they’re searching for; the ability to organize playlists into folders; Smart Shuffle, which lets the user change the “randomness” of shuffled songs; and the ability for Windows users to automatically sync contacts and calendars from Outlook onto their iPods. The iTunes Music Store has also added parental controls and album reviews and now features a catalog of over two million songs, making it the largest online music catalog in the world.

ROKR

Quote
Apple, Motorola and Cingular Wireless today announced the availability of the world’s first mobile phone with iTunes, enabling music lovers to transfer up to 100 of their favorite songs from the iTunes jukebox on their Mac or PC to their mobile phone.

The iPod nano looks sweet, but it doesn't seem like an appropriate replacement for the iPod mini.

iTunes 5's new look is much appreciated, if only to have a bit of change after years of the same look. The only new feature I plan to use straight away is AAC VBR.

And while I'm sure the ROKR is cool, I just don't see the need for a cell phone/music player combo. I'll keep my RAZR for now, thanks very much.

I was just coming here to post this, Pieter!  The nano looks really nice!

Just noticed that:

a) it's Apple's replacement to the iPod mini (it's gone from their site)
b) it's flash-based memory, not HDD-based (nice!)

On the plus side, it is dead sexy, should be very durable, and holds a lot of data for a flash-based player.

On the minus side, they are very expensive per MB compared to HDD players.

Does anybody know if these new players address the gapless issue?

I was checking this out yesterday on Apples site.  Looks pretty cool.  I like that it's flashed based, didn't notice that yesterday.  And black is so nice.

Video iPod announced, no pics yet.

Quote
New iPod announced! The new iPod, as speculated, features video capabilities and the wider display, but it’s still a music-first device.

The device will feature a 2.5-inch display, QVGA resolution (320 x 240), and will MPEG-4 h.264 (natch), and presumably Quicktime.

The new iPod will be 30% thinner than the current 20GB iPod (making it 0.44-inches thick—say wha?), and will feature a 60GB version and editions of both in black. The 20GB should go for $299, and the 60GB for $399. They’ll be shipping next week.

...and something free for the rest of us... iTunes 6 with music videos and television shows. itunes.com has version 6 advertised, but you still see iTunes 5 when you click to download. Never fear, it is actually the version 6 download.

I'm such a resolution whore, it's hard for me to watch actual shows in QVGA.   My PDA does a full 640x480 in 4:3, and even letterboxed shows look damned nice.

Of course, my PDA doesn't have a big hard drive.

Tradeoffs, tradeoffs.

Who am I kidding.   Video functionality not withstanding, I'd buy that new 60GB iPod in a second if they'd just fix the damned gapless playback problem (I listen to lots of live shows and other music that segues).

Looks like it also supports composite video out. Not sure I want to watch a show on my 53" at 320x240. I'll stick with alt.binaries for tv watching.

I agree. It's really amazing to me that Apple hasn't bothered to address gapless playback (assuming they still haven't).
